1. What file formats does Count Anything support?

Count Anything supports the following file formats:

  • Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx, .rtf)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls, .xlsx, .csv)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pptx)
  • HTML (.html, .shtml, .htm)
  • XML (.xml)
  • Text (.txt)
  • PDF (.pdf)
  • Open Office Writer (.odt), Impress (.odp), and Calc (.ods)

2. Does it count words in text boxes?

Yes, it counts words in text boxes in MS Word, and words in text boxes and some other shapes (such as graphs) in MS Excel.

3. What do you mean by Asian characters?

Asian characters are Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana (full and half-width), full-width numbers and punctuation, and Chinese and Korean characters. This is often abbreviated as “CJK.”

4. Can it count words in an MS Excel sheet embedded in a PowerPoint slide?

Yes.

5. Does it count words in PowerPoint notes?

Yes.

6. Can it count words in PDF files?

Yes, but with a caveat: only if the PDF file contains text and isn’t protected. Count Anything can’t give a word count if the file contains scanned images, or if it’s protected.

7. Can I count words on Web pages?

Yes. From the File Picker dialog box (see Getting a Word Count), click Add URL, and enter the URL of the Web page.

8. When I install an update, should I shut down Count Anything first?

Yes. If you download an updated version of Count Anything (for example using the online check for updates feature), you should quit from Count Anything before running the installer. If Count Anything is running, then installation will fail with an error (failed to overwrite files).
