However the problem is convincing the powers that be (or pay). So long as a Japanese client has a dictionary and even one instance of a previous "safe" translation, irrespective of quality, your fate is sealed. I wonder how many translators have set out to produce some really good work only to come up against this barrier. I agree with you totally.

It's one of the clearest examples I've seen of why knee-jerk translations just don't work.
