Wide2Narrow Word Macro

Download Wide2Narrow

Overview

Converts double-byte letters, numbers, and symbols (e.g. parentheses/punctuation) into their single-byte equivalents. This is useful if you are translating a Japanese document into English, and need to remove double-byte characters. The built-in "Change Case - Half-width" feature has the side effect of converting Katakana into half-width characters as well.

You can run Wide2Narrow on all open documents, the active document, or the current document's body/selected text box only.

Important Note: You should not run this macro with the Track Changes feature turned on. This has been reported to cause Word to crash! (Thanks to Ben Bullock for reporting this)

To Install

  1. Download the Wide2Narrow macro file. (Or download the zip version.)
  2. Launch Microsoft Word
  3. Press Alt + F11
The Microsoft Visual Basic window appears.
  4. From the File menu, select Import File...

    Import macro menu selection

  5. Import the Wide2Narrow.bas file.
    Close the Visual Basic window.

To Use

Press Alt + F8 to get the macro window, specify one of the following macros:

  • Wide2NarrowAll - run Wide2Narrow on all open documents
  • Wide2NarrowDocument - Run Wide2Narrow on the active document
  • Wide2NarrowStory - Run Wide2Narrow on the current story. A "story" is the current document body, selected textbox, etc.

Next, click Run.

Note that a side effect of the Wide2NarrowAll and Wide2NarrowDocument macros is that they "ungroup" all shapes in the document. This could change the appearance of the shape layout in some cases.

If you will be using a macro more frequently, then you can assign it a keyboard shortcut. To do so,

  1. Select Tools >> Customize
  2. Click Keyboard
  3. Set the "Categories" to Macros, and "Commands" to the macro you wish to assign
  4. Select "Press new shortcut key," and press your keyboard shortcut.
  5. Click Assign.
